So Many Cabs, So Many Colors

Each city in Morocco gives its thousands of “petit taxis” or small cabs, their own particular shade of bright paint. Casablanca is red, Rabat is blue, and Marrakech is a sort of beige or really off- white. Fez repeats the red of Casablanca. Sale, sister city to Rabat, repeats the beige/off-white of Marrakech. The color change is meant to keep otherwise enterprising cabbies, and are they ever enterprising, from straying out of their assigned locales. If a person is weighted down with one too many Moroccan carpets or is accompanied by more than two friends, then the Grand Taxis is the way to go. These Mercedes sedans ranging in age from almost new to “I didn’t know Mercedes made cars that old” can be found lined up outside train stations, hotels, and other high traffic areas.  Always negotiate a price before setting out, as drivers will hike their rates for unsuspecting foreign visitors.
