Attah on: Governor Victor Attah comments on current issues facing his state, and indeed, all of Nigeria

Governor Victor Attah

The New Citizen
"My administration will seek to create a new breed of Akwa Ibomites who will hold their heads high in the Nigerian Federation and boldly demand their due without fear or favor, but rather with firmness devoid of belligerence. The new Akwa Ibomite will lumber where his fathers scurried. He will scream where his fathers whispered, and he will be heard in a country which prides itself as a federation in which the rights of all are respected and protected. We will demand and obtain that respect and protection as of right."

Education
"Education should be used to develop citizens who will know that a declaration of right of one man is also the right of another, and every citizen’s liberty should therefore be disciplined into freedom to be enjoyed by all."

Government & Industry
"With regard to industries, government records of management have been largely unenviable. They appear to exist mainly as avenues for "jobs for the boys." They are veritable drain pipes or fund guzzlers. The situation demands greater insight and ingenuity to bring about the necessary change."

Youth and Women
Nigeria is "a young state with an old mentality. The old insist on holding sway till death while the youth are expected to wait patiently until it is their turn. Even to take that turn, there is little effort to groom them deliberately.
"In the same vein, our women are largely ornamental at best or beasts of burden at worst. Moreover, old attitudes and customs have crystallized the feminization of poverty in our society.
"I assure these marginalized ‘minorities’ in our state that I will pursue a deliberate policy to reverse those trends."

Labor
"Manpower is the most important resource for the development of the state. "

Communication
"Among many of the projects often undertaken by government, communication facilities tend to be much more democratic. They are available to both the king and the pauper. Besides, they always outlast their creators."

Health & Social Welfare
"Government has always tended to treat the extension of health benefits to the citizens as a privilege. My administration will treat it as a fundamental right of the people. In other words, it will not only receive adequate attention, it will be guarded jealously."

Taxes
"The path to our fiscal well-being lies in a greatly enhanced revenue generation. This, my government will pursue vigorously. Let me hasten, however, to state that the trend of imposing more and more levies on the people will be reversed. Already the people are too overburdened to bear more."
