Background

The Promoters
Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone Ltd is one of the largest private sector ports in India, promoted by the Ahmedabad- based Adani Group, founded in 1988, one of the fastest growing business houses in India. Adani Group has the business interest in ports, power, infrastructure real estate, trading, edible oils, gas distribution and logistics.

Location
Mundra Port is located in the north Gulf of Kutch at a distance of 73 kms from Kandla and 350 kms from Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat. Due to its location advantage, the Port serves as a “Natural Gateway” to the northern and western hinterland of India. It is well connected by rail, road, air and pipelines.

Commodities/Cargoes
Mundra Port has facilities and capabilities for handling all types of liquid and solid cargo. Some of the major cargo that the port handles include agri products ( sugar, rice, wheat, pulses, DOC), fertiliser raw material like (sulphur, DAP, MoP, urea ), coal, coke, steel plates, steel pipes, steel coils, minerals, scrap, edible oils, chemicals, POL products, etc. The Port also has facilities to handle Bitumen in bulk.

Transport Link
Road: Mundra Port is connected to the National and State Highway network. Mundra Port is well connected by National Highway No. 8 A (Delhi-Kandla) up to Mandvi via Mundra.

Rail: A privately developed 57 km broad gauge railway line from Mundra Port to Adipur railway station provides rail connectivity to the national railway grid, . Palanpur-Samakhiali broad gauge rail link conversion has helped to shorten the distance between the northern hinterland and Mundra by 218 km.

Air: Mundra Port is well connected by air as Bhuj Airport is only 60 km and Kandla Airport is 50 km away with daily domestic flights to Mumbai. In zone private aerodrome with air strip of international class is fully functional which receives private/chartered flights.

Berthing Facilities
Multipurpose Terminals
The Port has eight operational multipurpose berths with draughts up to 17.5 metres that can handle dry bulk, break bulk and liquid cargo. These berths are capable to handling post-Panamax and Capesize vessels. (See Chart 1 below)

Container Terminal
Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) is currently operated by Dubai Ports World and it has two berths with a draught of 17.5 metres and can handle 1.2 million ‘TEUs per annum.

Single Point Mooring
The Mundra Port has an SPM terminal 6 km offshore for the handling of crude oil. The SPM is at a depth of 32 metres and can accommodate Very Large Crude Carriers. The SPM is capable of handling up to 25 million Mt of crude cargo a year. Crude oil discharged is transported via submarine pipelines to a dedicated tank farm.

Second Container Terminal
A new container handling terminal having 2 berths and alongside depth of 17.5 metres capable of handling 1.25 million TEU per annum is being operational with back-up area and rail connectivity. The length of the berth is 632 mtr and 47.5 mtr width, capable of handling Capesize vessels with back up.

Performance
Mundra Port has registered a growth of 68.7 % in traffic throughput at 19.8 million metric tonnes (MMT) in the year 2006-07 as compared to 11.7 MMT in the year 2005-06. (See Chart 2 below)

Mundra Port has also being conferred with the ‘Port Authority of the Year 2006’ award, in the Middle East and Indian sub-continent by Lloyd’s List.
