Business and consumer facilities expanding in Adjara

Beautiful downtown Batumi: The “Riviera” complex on the Black Sea

A large recreation center and business complex called “Batumi Riviera” is currently being constructed on a superb plot of land in the heart of downtown Batumi. The property will contain living facilities, a modern business center with offices and shopping as well as a yacht club.

Adjarian connection from Asia to Europe: The Railway Ferry Bridge

At the heart of the “new” silk route is a bridge connecting railway cars and automobiles between land and sea. Part of the Port of Batumi, the Railway Ferry Bridge launched in 1998, carries more than 4 million tons of cargo annually. Using the Black Sea as a short-cut, shippers are able to reduce the transportation time on a route such as between Hong Kong and Amsterdam by 16 to 17 days.

State of the art passenger terminal: The new Batumi railroad station

A completely modern passenger train station will open in 2003 in Batumi. Seen above is a model of the facility on which construction began last year. Georgian Railway carries 5 million passengers annually with a good many of this sum traveling to Adjara, particularly during the summer months when the region becomes the nation’s leading seaside resort.

On the Adjarian border between Georgia and Turkey: Customs facilities at Sarpi

One of the most important functions in the Autonomous republic of Adjara is management of the border processes including customs and tax collection. The main location for this work is in the town of Sarpi, the last settlement in Georgia before Turkey. Sarpi is a modern village with schools, a sports stadium and a trade center. It was built in 1998 and experts from The United Nations say the Sarpi customs complex is one of the best such facilities on the globe.

The customs facility as seen from the Turkish side of the border is at left. The complex includes interview rooms, customs stations and screening facilities to help prevent the traffic in contraband.

In the nearby village of Adlia, customs officials have established a center for large truck customs handling.

Quality grape producers and vintners

A substantial number of wines are produced in the Adjarian region. They range from ecologically clean white to dry red, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sparkling wines.

“Kokotauri”

Adjara is rich in its mineral and drinking water resources. The beverage “Kokotauri,” popularly known as Ko-Ko, was recently awarded a gold medal at a Paris exhibition, cited especially for “best ingredients.”

Construction for the 21st century: “Agordzineba Mshenebloba” or Revival Builders

One of the most innovative business enterprises in Adjara, indeed globally, is the building company with the Georgian language name of “Agordzineba Mshenebloba” which translates into “Revival Builders.” Based on a technique licensed from Germany, the firm has been producing high quality, cost effective office buildings and residences since the late 1990’s.

The process involves the use of molds for establishing the basic structures and pre-fabricated material for the rest of the construction. A good sized home, such as the one seen at left, can be completed in less than two months. The company was founded by George Abashidze, currently Mayor of Batumi, during a time in which he was just entering politics and also starting business ventures.
