International visitors converge on Batumi by land and sea

Last year’s Black Sea Yacht Regatta included seven yachts from the U.S. All the crew members indicated they enjoyed their anchorage in the beckoning harbor of Batumi.
Among the 136 participants in the International Classic Auto Rally were many American drivers and autos.

For many Georgians the Adjarian Coast of the Black Sea is a much anticipated summer pleasure. Visitors from around the world have also been finding the sub-tropical area to be a much desired destination. In the last several years organized motor rallies and yacht regattas have also found Batumi to be a splendid stopping point.

One of the most memorable group of visitors, which included citizens of many countries, was The International Classical Auto Rally, subtitled “80 Days Around the World.” Drivers and passengers from 19 countries—including the United States, France, Italy and many others—stopped in the Adjarian capital as part of their new millenium global road tour.

Another more permanent group of foreign guests are the participants in the Black Sea Yacht Regatta, which has established a pattern of sailing into Batumi every other year. The most recent Regatta, in 2001, had about 125 participants on nearly 50 yachts. The organizing committee of this pleasure boat extravaganza is involved in promoting rapid development of yachting and tourism on the Black Sea.
