Are Olympic Games In Leipzig’s Future?

The City of Leipzig, together with the German cities of Dresden, Chemnitz and Riesa, this Fall announced that it would enter its bid in the international competition to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

So far, five German cities – Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Leipzig, Hamburg and Stuttgart – are in the running to be the country’s nominee. Berlin, which launched an unsuccessful bid for the 2000 games, is still considering whether to put its name forward.

The cities have until May 2002 to present their bids to the German National Olympic Committee.

Germany, which also is hosting the 2006 Soccer World Cup, last hosted the 1972 Olympics.

Among the international competitors for the 2012 Games are Washington DC and Baltimore, MD.

The decision by the International Olympic Committee
regarding which country will host the 2012 Games will not be made until 2005.—
