Invasor achieves glorious double

American horse Invasor and Fernando Jara see off Premium Tap to land the 2007 Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline, at Nad Al Sheba on March 31.

American Horse of the Year Invasor won the $6 million Dubai World Cup in March, the richest race in the world. The Dubai victory sealed a remarkable double for the popular thoroughbred, which won the Breeders Cup Classic in 2006.

Invasor, who Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum says is the “best horse” he has ever owned, now gears up for a busy six months ahead, which will see it compete in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont on June 30 and return to defend his title at the Breeders Cup Classic, which is being held at the Monmouth Park Racetrack in New Jersey.

Should he win that race, Invasor will surpass Cigar for the all-time earnings of a US-based horse. To date, Invasor has won 11 of the 12 times he has run. Californian trainer Doug O’Neill also saw success on Dubai World Cup night with Spring At Last, which came up on top in a three-horse battle to win the $1 million Godolphin Mile.
