Offering small classes, Instituto Britanico guarantees students the utmost in individual attention and catered learning needs.

Founded almost 20 years ago by British teachers, the Instituto Británico is a private educational institution dedicated to the teaching of English and Spanish. During each term more than seven hundred students enrolling the classes, either on an individual basis or through company contracts. High teaching standards and an impressive success rate among students attracts individuals who are serious about learning. Numerous companies, as well as governmental and international agencies, which understand the value of investing in their staff, are also drawn to the institute.

Rather than employ a rigid adherence to any one methodology, the institute places an emphasis on the integrated development of all communicative skills, with major importance attached to small class size.

The Spanish courses offered at the institute present a solid basis for language study that can be modified to include specialized vocabulary and contact with Costa Rican professionals in similar fields of work. For this reason the Instituto Britanico is the first choice among many professionals, including: international bankers, business executives, journalists, diplomats, medical specialists, educators, scientists and international development workers.

For people intending to study or work abroad, the Instituto Britanico is uniquely Central American, and serves as the official examination centre for a number of internationally recognized qualifications: in English, examinations of the University of Cambridge and the British Council and, in Spanish, examinations of the Instituto Cervantes and the University of Salamanca. The institute is also a teachers’ training centre for the University of Cambridge’s Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

The institute is conveniently located in a pleasant area on the eastern side of San José, only minutes from the city centre. There is a fine selection of restaurants, entertainment and shops close by. The main building occupies a charming old house with classrooms arranged around a large walled garden. The students can enjoy their free time in the cafeteria, or in the Study Centre, which includes a library, a quiet area in which to work, as well as computers with Internet access. The Instituto Britanico also operates a branch on the west side of San José and another centre in Liberia, the capital of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province.
