When a Hollywood film was shot in The Bahamas, filmmakers needed a full-size replica of an old sailing ship. In Freeport, Quality Services Ltd. handled the job. Over the years, the Freeport-based engineering and construction firm has completed major industrial, marine, and electrical projects in New Providence, the Family Islands, and Central America.
It has built much of the infrastructure for Freeport Container Port, among other projects. This included electrical, mechanical and steel work for the port’s expansion, including several buildings. For Grand Bahama Power Company, it constructed a 13.5MW diesel power plant provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, carrying out the steel fabrication and erection, engine installation, and other work.
“In Grand Bahama, we have worked on every major industrial project. You name it – the power plant, container port, oil storage facility, and the shipyard,” said Quality Services spokesman Emanuele Gariboldi, vice president of sales.
Situated by Freeport harbor, the 200-employee firm also does major ship repairs – from major steel work to replacing mammoth cruise-ship engines, utilizing equipment it designed. Some of its more impressive equipment is a 35-ton overhead crane. The firm can lift and transport equipment weighing up to 1,000 tons.
According to The Bahamas Investor magazine, the firm designed and created complex sets for the “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Gariboldi declined to comment, citing confidentiality agreements.
The firm’s 12-acre facility has 150,000-square feet of building space for fabrication, pre-fabrication, and pre-assembly of industrial plants. It houses the largest electrical, mechanical, and steel fabrication facility in the region, Gariboldi noted.
The private firm was established years ago by a team of engineers and construction specialists who previously worked for Italy’s state-oil oil company, Eni. Arriving in Grand Bahama to build an oil refinery, they stayed on when the work was done and established Quality Services.
Proud of its contribution to developing Grand Bahama, the firm sponsors a youth soccer team. It’s also proud that many people who work in “high-level technical positions” in Grand Bahama “got their start at Quality Services. |
